There are now 347,000 men and 173,00 self employed women working beyond current state pension age. Those us aged between 50 and 69, the so called Baby Boomer age account for 1.9 million of the UK,s total five million self employed.
No longer content to shuffle off and sit in a corner watching endless episodes of Pointless or The Chase we are turning our backs on the decades long image of a pensioner.
Apart from the fact 60 is the new middle age we have found ourselves often still supporting millennial children or elderly parents, sometimes both.
We may ache a bit more after overdoing it at the yoga class and need the next strength up skin moisturiser but we are still very much out there doing it! That means that with our continuing health and energy we still strive to make a difference and still have life goals wether that be visiting darkest Peru, running a marathon or turning our hands to that creative project we never got around to in our youth. Nowadays we want to go out with a bang and not a whimper cramming everything into the years we have left which today can mean another 20 to 30 years after so called retirement.
Starting our own business can satisfy our creative side, make us still a useful member of society and of course provide an income when our traditional job role has finished, so its easy to see why the rise in self employed among the not so young has steadily and continually increased.
